Having read Caro's the Power Broker I have a special appreciation for the New York that Robert Moses created, which was in full bloom by the 1940s. Hearing mention of Jones Beach in the opening scenes--- seeing those sweaty cramped trams and subway cars -- a direct result of the Moses policies. New York when it was still full of micks and meatballs; when the years of Tammany Hall were still wanning.
I am reminded of Stray Dog and The Third Man--- I also imagine that French Connection was a little inspired by the subway chase sequence in open New York...
Its incredible to see the crowds and people of New York as they were in the 40s--- there is such a playful energy to this film; so quippy-- and all this comes in part from Barry Fitzgerald who inhabits this role as no other.
This is really just right up my alley, love this kinda thing.
