The core message of this movie is not one I think is even disagreeable - that the Ramayana’s themes can be reinterpreted for modern times and even be meaningful for non-Hindus - but the way Paley, a white Jewish woman, uses such egregious, Orientalist, overly-sexualized, borderline racist caricatures to portray Sita and the other women in this film just left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Don’t be fooled by this movie’s apparent simplicity.

Telling a classical Indian tale (and a break-up story) through a thousand ideas at once, 5 different animation styles, and an Annette Hanshaw jukebox musical… This is one of the most creative movies I’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing.

An unrepeatable feat, and a must-see for any fans of bizarro, unique movies.

EDIT: damn it, i just found out the director is also a massive TERF. Oh well 🙃
