this is probably kurosawas most underrated film, the concept of richard gere being in an akira kurosawa movie is just mindblowing and so out of touch with reality, i thought he was actually pretty good for the 20 minutes he's actually in this for, my dvd says this STARS richard here and i was so confused then i just start hearing him speak japanese and it's so random but it works in the story and it's not like he was there just because it was richard gere thankfully. this is one of kurosawas most beautiful movies and i hate how underlooked it is, so much beautiful shots and the way he uses nature for his shots it's like they're an accessory to the camera and it's so stunning. i love the idea for the story about the generational trauma of war and how oblivious the children can be towards the survivors and then there's the conflict between the americans and japanese which i found very interesting and i haven't seen it explored in such a way before. the dialogue is expressive and very realistic i love the screenplay so much and the acting by the woman who played kane was just amazing and so underrated. this movie as a whole is just underrated. the shots of the waterfall are like soothers to my eyes, like i could look at them shots of the waterfall for years and id be so at ease i love it so much. the pacing in this is deliberately slow so u can fully consume the emotions displays on screen and u can fully consume what the characters are saying. the ending of this is just so good, it's very ambiguous but it delivers its message of general trauma and the effects of war in a very beautiful and poetic way.

An under watched Kurosawa drama. This film is a major slow burn, but is one I do recommend checking out!

Mundane, hot, sticky, summer days. Cicadas in the wind, traditional Japanese house, family. This was the film I decided to watch to introduce me to Akira Kurosawa’s work and I throughly enjoyed it. It’s  family and the children coming to understand what happened in Nagasaki, and how haunting history still is. I thought Richard Gere was going be a polarizing character, but I thought his character was endearing. He honestly shined so well in his few minutes of screen time along with the Grandmother. I enjoyed this film the shots, the vibe, the mutual understanding of it all. HOWEVER WHY IS THIS FILM SO INACCESSIBLE MY SUBTITLES WERE OFF SOO BAD.
