A great yakuza film from the ever versatile Takashi Miike. Gone are any wacky Miike-isms and instead we are presented a much more subdued, straight forward yakuza film. Not to say it doesn't feel like Miike, there's still plenty of him here - bursts of ultra violence, and his very distinct brand of nihilism to be exact.

37th Miike Movie!
Very very solid remake here from Miike. I watched the original right before this sooo I’m gonna be comparing the two a lot here and while I do prefer the original, this remake does a lot of things right and clearly people agree cause this and the original both have the same average rating on here which is pretty rare to see with remakes. This still keeps the same story just changes the main character a good bit and the crimes in this represent much more modern crimes. The new take on Ishikawa (Ishimatsu) is definitely what threw me off a bit and it’s not bad at all I just prefer the original take on him I think they’re both good takes it’s just up to you which one you like more.
Im really glad this isn’t just like a remaster though, Im glad it’s actually a remake and not just the same exact story and everything again just prettier. I will say the best part of it is definitely how much more violent it is. I mean hell, I thought the original was pretty violent, mainly at the end when Ishikawa killed himself, BUT WHEN HE KILLED HIMSELF IN THIS SHIT, I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH BLOOD COME OUT OF A SINGLE PERSON EVER JESUS.
I’m also pretty glad I got to see Shun Sagata again with his crazy ass screaming voice and Gajiro Satoh from Osaka Tough Guys??? (rest in piece) The cast here is pretty stacked everybody did a great job.

i was REALLY not expecting to like this more than the Fukusaku version but I think I actually did, as much as he was still evil asf in that version, in this one he’s just played so repulsively i love it
also i absolutely despise him but “what a laugh, 30 years of raising hell” is raw as fuck, he kinda ate with that one 💀
