Despite its opacity, its a gripping noir that entertains. Brilliant atmosphere; hazy fields, smokey rooms, and a puzzle buried beneath a verbal fog that i've yet to understand. Theres a lot of names in Le Doulos, i couldn't put a face to almost any of them, but perhaps the verbal fog heightens the mood. Do i need to know the faces to feel the chase ? not really. There is Melville's trademark fatalism with a photo-finish. And Belmondo yet again provides whatever quality he so singularly emits (the assuredness of a man with both sicilian and french ancestry perhaps).
