If this was the only reference point I had for Park Chan-Wook it would be insane to believe he could ever make something like Oldboy

park chan-wook’s debut feels more like a sketchbook than a finished painting. you can see the themes he’ll later sharpen. fractured identity, violence simmering beneath quiet moments, a kind of melancholy beauty but here they’re rough and uneven. the film drifts in tone, sometimes hypnotic, other times frustratingly unfocused. still, there’s a rawness that makes it worth watching, a glimpse at a filmmaker just beginning to find his voice.
