A dying professor leaves his great-nephew a collection of documents pertaining to the Cthulhu Cult. The nephew begins to learn why the study of the cult so fascinated his grandfather. Bit-by-bit he begins piecing together the dread implications of his grandfather's inquiries, and soon he takes on investigating the Cthulhu cult as a crusade of his own.

Lovecraft can be difficult to adapt and I'm quite surprised call of cthulu hasn't gotten a bigger adaptation yet. That being said In 2005 we got a silent expressionist adaptation on a lower budget and you know what. Its atmospheric, entertaining and a good time.
Following the events of the novel very accurately the call of cthulu has the atmosphere in spades. I also quite like how the movie handles its Transitions as the story is being told. The ending is very good and on the edge of your seat as well.
The movie is shot very well too. Looking like a silent movie of the 20s and it absolutely works. Seeing the newspaper to tell the background information just works here too.
The set design is pretty great too. Cthulu
kingdom and his design along with that entire sequence just looks great. The music is pretty good too and helps elevate the story.

As with most lovecraft adaptation, it is wonderfully chilling right up until the untouchable, unknowable otherworldly presence appears and becomes a physical threat.

I love you stylistic homages, I love you stop motion, I love you independent cinema.
I'm not huge on Lovecraftian mythos, so admittedly the build up to the undeniably great climax and ending didn't do much for me, but it was still so cool to watch this creative experiment in "what if someone had adapted his work in the silent era". AND THAT STOPMOTION CTHULU THAT YOU NEVER GOT THAT GREAT OF A LOOK AT, HELL YES.

I like the stop motion cthulu fella, but tbh this wasn't the most entertaining 😅 I feel like if you're making a black and white silent film you can do a whole lot more visually to make it interesting, especially if you're releasing it in 2005 😆😆

Visually this looks great. An almost pitch perfect emulation of the visuals of silent film horror, save for clearly being shot on digital - I wanna say some sort of camcorder? The soundtrack seems a little off and the story isn’t as engaging as I hoped it would be for 47 minutes, though. Not bad.
