A feature-length exploration of the game's creation, and a love letter to the trials of exploring new territory. There are no road maps or guide books for creating a new world. The only way through is to fail—over and over again. This is the story of how a team of artists, musicians, programmers, writers, actors, filmmakers, playtesters, and a lonely UI designer—came together and pushed each other to build something larger than themselves.

i truly wish i could play this for the first time again. the last of us is an incredibly important piece of media to me, every element of it. i love how much world building and effort goes into every detail and the amount of forethought as well is incredible. also, gustavo santaolalla. he is a true master artist, his work is so authentic and visceral that you can feel its emotional core. all in all this game has gotten me through some times, and i always find myself going back to the thought that underlying every gameplay decision you make and the way you move through the world is a singular, resonant truth “when you’re lost in the darkness, look for the light.”
“We had this wonderful piece of concept art we developed really early on and there are all of these wild animals that have escaped from a zoo and over the past 20 years have bred and now they have herds roaming these cities. And that’s something that tells you that life goes on and this world is worth saving. There’s something really pretty about nature reclaiming its domain once we are gone.”
“As the story evolved and took different shapes and different forms, the thing that was always there was Joel and Ellie.”
