Hope you won’t mind that I’m going to do some info dumping here. There is a LOT I want to say.
First of all, I have no idea why MGM wanted to market this film to kids. I know this film traumatized so many kids back in the day. It only traumatized me somewhat when I was a kid, but obviously not so much that I stopped watching it entirely. It was one of my favorites, and I actually watched it quite a bit!
Second, reincarnation being a big part of the plot. When I was a kid, I always thought of when I would die, I’d come back as a dog. 😂
Third, Sam Jackson’s performance of Rumbo should be mentioned more, ngl.
Fourth, the whole way they handled the home media releases was weird. When I was a kid, I got the vhs from my aunt. The cover art is what’s featured on the poster, puppy Fluke with the shoes on. But several years back, I found a different American vhs release that was out after the theatrical release. This one was more oriented for adults. For the cover art, see the three human characters on top, and you see adult Fluke on the bottom. This version also had scenes that were cut on the later release. Mainly just some pee scenes. These cut scenes are now in the film when you stream it digitally. I always thought that was odd.
Fifth, the dog acting is great. Maybe better than the human performances.
And sixth, how the fuck was Fluke’s mom an Australian Shepherd, and she gave birth to purebred Golden Retriever puppies?!?!
Kim and I had a great time reliving part of our childhood and laughing at how ridiculous this film was in certain parts. I take back the 4 1/2 star ratings I gave this film the past times I’ve logged it on here.
