Night of the Zombies
Dawn of the Dead on an island with National Geographic footage thrown in. The gore is quite extreme in some parts

Night of the Zombies
sure the gore at the end was cool but that does not at all make up for how unbelievably boring the rest of it was

Night of the Zombies

Night of the Zombies
1980 | Italian Horror | Zombies

Hm, I kinda expected to have more fun with this one. "Virus" aka "Hell of the Living Dead" aka "Night of the Zombies" aka "Zombie of the Savanna", like with so many of these low budget italian films one could go on listing all the different titles the film has all over the world for hours, was my first 'real' film by Bruno Mattei after I had only seen Fulci's "Zombi 3" in which he shot about half of the film together with Claudio Fragasso. Here, too, he collaborated with Claudio Fragasso, who wrote the script as well as directed part of the film.

As I said, I expected more, although of course I knew that this was cheap italo schlock that not only rips a lot of films but also uses/steals footage of other films as well as music. All in all, the film was just not entertaining for me and even the zombie action wasn't quite convincing and was rather uninteresting. I wasn't completely bored, but the film is kinda boring in places and just not entertaining enough.

The score is strong, some of the zombie effects and make-up look good and the end with the eyes is without question the highlight of the film, but otherwise there was little that I really liked. But that won't stop me from enjoying more Bruno Mattei films in the future.

Cheesy Italian gore that’s at times really genuinely compelling but is mostly just kind of bland.
