An engrossing watch made by wondrous performances and luxurious costuming coupled with some beautifully composed sequences but really that’s just the standard from a formal master like Coppola. The narrative however feels both overstuffed and unfocused, as attractive as I find Richard Gere with a mustache, his storyline, while being the more prominent, I certainly found less to like in it and would have preferred having almost if not the entire movie focused around the black performers of the club as opposed to those who really just come and go, seriously for a movie called “The Cotton Club,” there was a surprising lack of the club itself, instead just a slight mob story that even Coppola himself has done more inspired versions of.
