Slick action thriller that nails the noir aesthetic. The narrative is minimalist, the action sequences are lean and edited with precision. Ryan O’Neil and Bruce Dern’s characters counter each other in temperament perfectly and Isabelle Adjani is Isabelle Adjani.

This movie smells like burnt rubber and gasoline

As a huge fan of Drive and Le Samourai I’ve been wanting to watch this for ages, the missing middle piece in the lineage (you can throw Thief and Heat in too). After scouring the internet I finally settled on buying a European Blu-ray that was somehow not region locked, totally worth it. Such a stripped back and lean movie, none of the characters even had names which just adds to the atmosphere. Dialog is kept to a minimum. All headlights, parking garages and screeching tires. Some pretty amazing chase scenes in this, especially for the time. I also don’t know if night time LA has ever looked this cool before.

So ahead of its time, a new favorite for sure

I was a bit skeptical about watching this at first, having already seen Baby Driver, but fuck this movie laps it. This movie easily has the greatest car chase/driving sequence of all time, and it’s not even close. The sequence lasts a full 10 minutes without a single word spoken. Just tires screeching, engines roaring, horns honking, and lights flashing. If you’re a fan of Heat, Thief, The Warriors, or any of the Ocean’s movies, you’ll definitely love this.
