“Sarcasm is the recourse of a weak mind.” - Dr. Zachary Smith
“This mission SUCKS.”- Penny Robinson
This movie is objectively pretty terrible, especially during the final act - after the time travel stuff begins to kick in, the entire thing falls apart. That being said - the setup isn’t half bad, and as terrible as the dialogue is (especially with Matt LeBlanc’s borderline creepy character), there’s a lot here for the ten-year-old boy still inside of me to love.
Does it have any closure or reoccurring themes? No. Does it deliver on any of its character arc setups? Also no. Does it use any of its female characters in any meaningful way other than supporting the male characters from home? The answer is no again.
Yet…I had fun. I turned my brain off. The sets are super cool and I really like the dynamic between the characters, even if it isn’t executed all that well. I love the design of the costumes, and the body horror in the final act is the stuff of nightmares, at least before the monster is fully revealed.
None of it makes sense, and for me, it doesn’t have to make sense. I like the ideas here and all I really need out of this is some cool spaceships and a family just dysfunctional enough to leave me wondering how everything will work out in the end.
