Raimi and the Coens pair for a madcap comedy crime caper - what could possibly go wrong?
Well a lot apparently for most critics and in the production itself, although tbh the kind of dumb cartoon zany laughs presented here always work on me, so I had an ok time.
Victor (Reed Birney) is a nerdy security guard, who falls for glamorous Nancy (Shereee J Wilson) but she has eyes for Renaldo (an extended Bruce Campbell). Victor stumbles upon a murder plot involving Security Systems expert Ernest Trend (a shemping Edward R Pressman producer of many a great flick such as The Crow and plenty of shitty ones such as The Crow sequels) and hired un-alivers Brion James (from Blade Runner!) and Paul L Smith, can his heroics save the day and impress the girl?
This had a nightmarish production, with consistent feuding between Raimi and the studio. Campbell was intended to star in the lead role but was cut last minute by Embassy Pictures. Louise Lasser who plays Helen Trend, the Mrs Kravitz like wife of Pressman was reportedly high on coke for most of the shoot, fired her makeup lady and kept rocking up to set in a mess. Brion James trashed his hotel room in an attempt to exorcise a ghost.
The 80s man.
Raimi would continue to utilise this similar mad cap humour, but working it into other genres - such as the horror comedy genius of Evil Dead II. The Coens also adopted a same same human cartoon vibe with far better effect in Raising Arizona.
