It’s a great movie right up until they cross the Stargate. The entire concept of the gate is fascinating, the positioning system is surprisingly clever, and the visual effects were far ahead of their time.

Unfortunately, once they arrive on the other side, the film gradually loses what made it so compelling. Instead of exploring the incredible possibilities of its premise, it turns into a fairly conventional, low-budget sci-fi adventure. The Stargate itself remains the most interesting thing in the movie, and after crossing it, the story becomes less engaging with every passing scene.
