A very 80s movie if I do say so myself. I liked it but it doesn’t come without flaws. My big one is the whole romance part of it, like bruh, yall knew each other for like 10 minutes and it would also be like fucking your bosses mom from the past, kinda weird. Arnold is great in this film, really does act like a cyborg with all his movements and dialogue. Some very very iconic lines in this one. I will say that some of the practical and special effects are a bit dated compared to today but we will say it gives it charm. I’ll probably watch again but in my humble opinion it is a bit overrated.

Very enjoyable action movie

Very enjoyable action movie

In many ways this movie is ahead of its time. The action is thrilling and tense using the imposing figure that is Arnold Schwarzenegger. The core plot is intriguing and convoluted in all the right ways. The use of sci-fu elements with an almost slasher esque killer makes for an interesting set-up.

Schwarzenegger was absolutely the best choice for the terminator. He is physically imposing and his lack of acting finesse works in his favour for a machine posing as a human. Linda Hamilton and Michael Beihn both put in very good performances and sell the paranoia and isolation that comes from being hunted by something that no one would believe in. They’re pairing makes for an interesting dynamic with a world weary future warrior and the traumatised victim who settles into her destiny.

Stan Winston’s practical effects are the highlight of this feature for me. The puppet for the terminator after his skin is gone is phenomenal. It is an instantly iconic design and one that feels present in the world. His effects make the final sequence a stand out for me with the machine taking the slasher role slowly stalking Sarah. 

While this isn’t the height of this franchise it is a very good watch and without it we wouldn’t have one of the greatest action movies of all time.
