didn’t expect to get so invested in a family arguing for two hours but here we are. james dean completely lived up to the hype and somehow made every scene feel real and heartbreaking at the same time.
the whole film just has this emotional weight to it that sticks with you after it ends. now i really want to read the book because if this is only part of what steinbeck wrote, i need the full story.

Adapting only the final year or so of a slow burn epic that spans more than 50 years and then completely removing every single important theme of said story was certainly a choice

Great source material (one of the best books I’ve read) but misses the mark on some things. The characterization of some characters were weird, the omission of others was disappointing, but you still had Cal be great and complex. But it was always going to be hard adapting East of Eden.
