coherence is in that category of movie — this project (mainly its script) is so inspiring

anyone can make this! really! 50k budget!! how freaking cool is that!! i’ll die a happy man if i ever write something half as enthralling as this. the tension! the characters! the dialogue!!! ahh!!!

want to write so much more on rewatch, but for now i’m riding this inspirational high and smiling at how much fun the last 2 hours were

***2024 Goals***

I was not expecting Coherence to have the excellent ratings. It's currently at a 3.8 which is really high. Honestly, the first half of the film was really annoying me. The characters were getting easily scared and acting irrationally about the smallest things and then we they are confronted by something truly terrifying they don't react at all. Much of the dialogue feels like a failed attempt at trying to be realistic. These middle-aged adults talks like a bunch of college students. They have nothing going on in their lives but relationship drama and getting drunk. The most annoying thing about Coherence is how incoherent the camerawork is. It has a handheld feel that's almost found footage and it is beyond irritating. The shots are so close up, probably trying to be claustrophobic, but it almost made me sick. That's never happened to me before. On top of that, the strange editing choice to cut to black at various points as a transition was bizarre. It felt like a commercial break.

The one thing this film had going for it is the concept. I don't want to spoil anything as discovering what's going on with Coherence was pretty much the only reason I continued to watch it. Many horror concepts don't scare me and Coherence isn't technically even a horror film. However, due to the subject matter of this film, I was genuinely frightened during certain points. What I expected was going to happen was much scarier than what actually did happen, but I can't deny that I was anxious. The last half of this film really came through and reeled me back in even. The very end was a bit underwhelming and a little cliche.
