It's really a shame The Kingdom didn't get the real ending it deserved. These characters are incompetent, flat-out dumb, ridiculous and ignoring the obvious... but they're also really lovable, hilarious and sympathetic. Lars von Trier, through all of these wonderful characters, highlights what life is.
At the end of an episode, he talks about how huge the world is, and how small our Kingdom is in comparison. He insists that reminding ourselves of that is really what makes things matter. The people around us is what's most important. The ones you love, no matter how idiotic, demented, dead or possessed they are.
The Kingdom is also so hilarious. Shots from the toilet, incredible physical comedy and there is built-in humor when these characters face non-stop adversity. The world is hell, and Lars von Trier insists that we smile while facing that truth.
The technique here is almost unbelievable. von Trier's dogme 95 style shines bright, the yellow shade never lets the viewer go from the haunted Kingdom. The script is incredible, every performance is great and the special effects are beautiful, especially given all of the circumstances and context.
The finale is absolutely bonkers, and it makes me really sad that a The Kingdom III couldn't have been made right away.
The Kingdom II takes everything from the original and expands. It benefits from us thinking we know what to expect, because we definetely do not. With the benefit of (what seems like) a bigger budget, Lars von Trier puts his even bigger stamp on the show and these characters, and it's one of my favorite shows and pieces of film I've had to show to experience.
The Kingdom means a whole lot to me. It get comparisons to Twin Peaks, because of course. And I don't really hate that! Of course they are so different in so many ways. Embracing darkness and continuing to smile.
LOVE, I will never forget The Kingdom, and I cannot wait to watch Exodus
