Look, I love me some George A Romero and Tom Savini is goated with the sauce (and legit the best thing about this movie) but good lord this was a CHORE to get through. A 2 hour and 27 minute, meandering, counter cultural epic about renaissance fair bikers, who like really live for the scene man.
Arise good knight, I dub thee Sir Harley of Davidson!
Ed Harris is King Billy, who leads his merry troop of knights, knaves and wenches, across the American south, where they display daring feats of bravery (basically riding around on bikes and spearing each other with lances) to dumbfounded American hicks (including Stephen King credited as ‘Hoagie man’). Half the troop want to go full carny and make as much coin as possible, the other conform to a pure lifestyle of motorcycle medievals, in full belief that Harris is their King. Which would be well and good if Harris wasn’t going through some mid-life crisis, acting like a right d-bag to his kingdom. Tom Savini is his right hand man yet holds ambition of his own and is conflicted about Billy’s behaviour.
I guess your mileage is gonna vary on this one, dependent of how well you connect with King Billy. To me he was a total assclown, a pontificating loon high on the smell of his own farts. Also these fairs that he participates in are like a total WHS night mare. At one point a rouge bike smashes into the audience and knocks some poor mum clean over.
The best part is a parade through Smalltown USA with astonished extras really digging the vibe of what these crazy kids (and their fuel tank steeds) are putting down.
One of those movies were you pause, then cry in despair realising there is still over an hour of run time left.
