Holy shit this movie won me over. Starts off stodgy and feels like an odd white savior “south will rise again” film. But transforms into a really powerful character piece around Jeffery Wright most of all, in another performance worth all the awards. It’s not what you expect going in and it’s all the better for it. And everyone is really strong in this film - including Jewel!

Holy shit this movie won me over. Starts off stodgy and feels like an odd white savior “south will rise again” film. But transforms into a really powerful character piece around Jeffery Wright most of all, in another performance worth all the awards. It’s not what you expect going in and it’s all the better for it. And everyone is really strong in this film - including Jewel!

The idea of this movie goes a long way into helping this movie be a fine movie. The script and story are good and interesting but all the main performances outside of Jeffrey Wright being dull and stiff brings it just as much down, Maguire is just about the most unexciting lead in a war movie I have ever seen, and Jewel doesn’t bring anything to the screen except a pretty smile. Could of been better film with better performances but still worth a walk especially when considering how few movies focus on this part of the civil war.
