‘Rebecca’ is Alfred Hitchcock’s only Best Picture winner, which at the time the award was titled as ‘Outstanding Production’, and although Hitchcock has made quite a few films I believe to be better than Rebecca, this film deserved the award. Adapted from the book by Daphne du Maurier with the same name, Rebecca is such a fun watch with great acting from Joan Fontaine and Laurence Oliver, beautiful cinematography from George Barnes, and being directed by Alfred Hitchcock made this film an absolute classic and even though it won Best Picture, it’s still such an underrated film in Alfred Hitchcock’s stacked filmography.

‘Rebecca’ won 2 Academy Awards for Best Picture and Black-and-White Cinematography, but the award I felt got robbed was Joan Fontaine not winning Best Actress. She was amazing in this film and it’s such a shame she was not awarded for this performance. Truly one of the better acting performances in all of Hitchcock’s films.

A Hitchcock, not necessarily as a platform for his style, but in service of a great story. Smooth, efficient (you get that these people are in love within 10 minutes. Other films can’t do it over 2 hours), and still with some moments of real beauty. Mrs Denvers is terrifying.
