Definitely better than I expected and I suppose one of my favourite western films (clearly there isn't very much on that). I actually gotta say I did enjoy this a lot more than I expected. I feel like I don't like old Hollywood westerns because they are often problematic and feel rather steeped in the mythic proportions of old Americana. Almost trying to glorify that horrid era which composed of many horrible things including a genocide of native Americans. Obviously this isn't the most progressive film ever but I did enjoy it admittedly. The scenery is stunning. Truly gotta say America and Mexico are stunning at the end of the day, the nature is beautiful and the desert is great. The cast is fantastic. Burt Lancaster is 50 years old in here and it's hard to believe given how athletic his character is. Lee Marvin id a great actor. Robert Ryan and Woody Strode round out with good supporting performances. Claudia Cardinale managed to bring in much sensuality but also made the film a bit more interesting to me. Jack Palance and Ralph Bellamy were great and the ending shift was quite amazing. Also the action sequences were quite great too actually!

Man sitter og venter på at det skal komme noe litt dypere her. Om maskulinitet, om gun-for-hire-livet eller om westernen som sjanger. Også kommer det liksom aldri. Her blir den, dessverre i 2025, litt overskygget av filmer som kom i årene etter 66. The Wild Bunch og Duck, You Sucker spesielt.

Men det vi faktisk har er en kompetent og artig sjangerfilm. Skapt av folk med engasjement for kunsten sin. Nydelig skutt og eksemplarisk spilt. Lancaster og Marvin har den type tilstedeværelse på film som rett og slett ikke eksisterer lenger.

“The Professionals” has a phenomenal cast, a great premise and good story developments, some fantastic dialogues and some cool action, but I didn’t really jam with this.

I liked it, but it didn’t really click. The last 20 minutes are the best part of it and Jack Palance is a joy every time he’s on screen, but all in all this didn’t really do it for me.
