i have way too much freedom so i decided to take a chance and press shuffle on the watchlist. it came up with this. i was honestly excited— one, because its free on youtube. two because the mccarthyist era is criminally underdone in movies (for obvious reasons, hello hollywood blacklist!)
now this is no mind-blowing leftist masterpiece by any means. its a solid movie, very 90s history film in nature, communicates what it needs to but not much beyond. i found it enjoyable, but hard to say if its the "holy grail" of films depicting mccarthyism because again, there arent that many.
what i did love about this is robert de niro! i loved his character AND he was a cutie. real men cuss out HUAC with no regrets and go home to be a great father to the kids 💔

I've gained a real interest in the McCarthyism era after watching "The Apprentice" and reading up on Roy Cohn and McCarthy, but this movie feels oddly paced and doesn't give any feeling except "oh this lost people jobs and was a witchunt" which most people already know. De Niro is good in this and that's all this is worth watching for (including the final court scene)
