Imagine my relief finding this hidden gem with English subtitles after over a year of searching!!! I even asked a Polish friend's dad. The funny thing is, he had a copy of the film! On VHS. AND without subtitles...
Anyways, I believe this was a classic case of a perfectly good movie being marred by too-high expectations. I expected something similar to Costa-Gavras' scathing, incendiary thrillers. Parts of the film were like that, but Wajda focused on individuals and their experiences rather than the entire political scene at play. It was wholly entertaining and kept my attention for (pretty much) the full runtime.
Also who was going to tell me that this is a sequel??? I've got to track down Man of Marble now!
