An absolute masterclass in light and shadow. Fassbinder shoots it magnificently, blending German New Wave and classic Hollywood to create something totally new. The use of black and white reminded me a lot of Fellini’s 8 ½. That’s about the highest compliment I can give! I love how twisted and dark the film becomes as it goes on. It’s absolutely a film noir, but the characters have uncomfortably jagged edges that are more commonly found in some sort of horror film. I don’t think I “enjoyed” watching it (it made me so uneasy!) but I was blown away by the craftsmanship from all involved.
