The blunt racism, sexual violence and messy politic collectively being part of the whole trash genre in Boxcar Bertha, whereas it's often considered as Scorsese's worst film and i agree with majority opinion. It's rough, convoluting and they way Scorsese deployed the low budget production really amplified the movie's flaws.
But, beyond all those limitations, this movie is pretty solid and i unironically enjoyed it. There is a strange click during the 40 minutes of the movie that engage my attention. The plot has nothing special in it, and truthfully, quite dull, but Barbara Hershey is a real deal as the rebellious Boxcar Bertha, swinging from one foray to another with her ragged gang.
Moreover, the cinematography he employed with the zoom-out and split diopter in the beginning really sealed the grip. Sort of uneven yet revealing movie from early Martin Scorsese that functioned as the bridge towards finding his own cinematic sound.
