the fact that the people at the race aren’t actors and are actually just members of the public makes this even better and this was genuinely quite funny

watching the people in the background laughing at him is so strangely endearing - seeing this is like watching the inception of genius

This is the first film where Chaplin plays the Tramp, the problem is that the latter is not that funny because he is a braggart and in a certain sense haughty, while the one we all know better ("The Kid" for example) is a person who brags but with a heart of gold and at times naive.
