Gamera escapes from his rocket enclosure and makes his way back to Earth as a giant opal from New Guinea is brought back to Japan. The opal is discovered to have been an egg that births a new monster called Barugon. The creature attacks the city of Osaka by emitting a destructive rainbow ray from his back, along with a freezing spray capable of incapacitating Gamera.

Primitive and primordial mega monster combat. Half of the battles are spent screaming and holding stance. Barugon has a rainbow beam that comes out of his back; it ranks top tier monster abilities. Gamera's UFO turtle ability looks even cooler this time. When the monster do make contact, it's rough and tumble. Barugon's wounds are gnarly, purple oozing sludge.
The story and non-monster stuff? The story is so bad it's good. The first chunk without monsters is rough. But the physical combat (at least two scenes) is absolutely brutal. The fight scenes with humans has no reason to be this brutal. But it's way better for it. The character, Onodera, is unhinged. But look at Kōji Fujiyama, I guess this guy is bound to be mad. The brutality of the fights ended up stringing together the primitive feeling of the whole film.
This is one I think I'll keep in my back pocket. It's a perfect blend between professionalism and diy.

Pretty enjoyable Kaiju flick along the lines of mid-Showa era Godzilla movies. Definitely enjoyed this more than the previous Gamera movie despite not having a whole lot of Gamera in it, but honestly that just means the plot and characters were decent enough to keep me invested. Also RAINBOWS.
