I struggled to find a replacement Arabic film for my 2025 Goals list so I just decided to watch the first one I found. Tobe Hooper's film Djinn was the lucky winner. Unfortunately, this one's awful. There's zero emotion or tension. The actor's give nothing to their performances and I'm sure it's because they realized the movie was going to flop anyways. There's no chemistry between the characters and I didn't care if anything happened to them. To be completely transparent, I didn't expect anything more from this movie. I will say that there's some interesting cultural details in here that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. That's saving it from a 1/5.

I watched this movie as part of a marathon where I aim to watch a film from every country, and it was truly a horrible experience—not in a fun way.
Despite being from 2013, this film feels like a relic of early 2000s horror. With poor editing, pacing, and audio mixing, it seems the producers lacked the skill to make a competent movie. The performances, particularly from the female lead who oddly resembles Anne Hathaway, are laughable. Nothing happens in this film, and the practical effects are so bad they verge on parody.
On top of that, I found the narrative’s treatment of the female character infuriating. She’s constantly infantilized, pushed around, and treated as if she’s dumb. In the film’s final moment, her husband murders her, an act that is weirdly framed as triumphant or at least ‘cool.

Adds interesting cultural aspects and slick style to what’s now a bit well worn territory. Couple of pretty good scares and a little nastiness here and there. I watched an extended cut and it didn’t drag. These djinn are djerks!

Day 12 (late): a movie with a weird name

I hate giving a Tobe Hooper movie an half star, after all he directed my favorite horror film, but this film is just awful, really too bad it’s his last film.
The story is so badly structured that it feels like the movie just don’t know where to go, or even where it is at. The directing is bad, the acting is mediocre, the script is one of the worst I ever seen, but the editing is probably the worst editing in a horror movie since slender man. It’s also full of stupid jump scares and obvious “plot twists”.
