budget was spent entierly on chris hemsworth. was maybe trying to make fun of the horror genre but didn’t do it hard enough to be ironic. was not really scary or funny, and turned into a shitty action movie halfway through. i struggle to find much redeeming here, it feels like it was made without too much thought.

i was overwhelmingly unentertained by this movie — the acting is awful, the dialogue is eye rolling, the characters are unlikeable, the action isn’t fun, and the scares aren’t creative or even effective.

… that said, the main schtick of this movie is really kind of a love letter to shitty horror movies (and that thus some of the above is definitely intentional) so i must acknowledge that i am indeed pretty sure i “got it”, but that it just wasn’t enough for me.

i think what’s most disappointing to me is that i see potential in this idea — retconning an explanation for everything dumb that’s ever happened in a horror movie is really funny, but the idea wasn’t fleshed out enough for me to really enjoy this on concept alone. for a movie that’s retconning unexplainable things in horror movies there sure are a lot of unexplainable things here. i think an airtight story with no loose ends works better here

and also, yeah — they forgot to make it entertaining. just make it fun dude its not gonna ruin ur grand vision

While marketed as satirical horror — I think this movie is primarily a comedy that doubles as a love letter to horror fans.

In the first half, it satirizes the nonsensical themes that horror movies frequent. In the second half, however, it ties those plot points to create an overarching narrative that covers almost everything under the horror umbrella.

This movie was painfully cringey, but maybe that was the point? Idk, people forget how corny the horror movies that it’s satirizing are in the first place.

For as much as I hate on him, I think Whedon’s innately cringey style of writing helped me not take this movie too seriously.
