It’s nowhere near as good as Lubitsch’s original, but still so funny and so entertaining. If anybody could do the near-impossible task of remaking it, it’s probably Mel Brooks, who furthered the original’s Nazi-satire legacy. Most of the scenes and dialogue are verbatim from the original, but it doesn’t feel too much like a carbon copy for it to become stale thanks to the cast, especially Charles Durning who is hilarious as Col. Erhardt.(even getting a surprise Oscar nod for it). The only cast member that is clearly inferior to the original is probably Anne Bancroft, who has nowhere near the comedic timing and distinct physical humor of Carole Lombard.(but then again, most comedic actors don’t). I wish it expanded more on the darker aspects of the original rather than being a straight-ahead comedy, but it’s still worth seeing for Brooks fans.
