Nic Cage (or is it Nickelback’s own Chad Kroger?) joins Hellboy and that one Dad from the Netflix show where all the kid are sending egg plant emojis on a journey to transport a witch cross country so some monks can cure medieval Covid.
This effort from Dominic Sena has the cold and sombre visual aesthetic of Game of Thrones (it even has the Yarp Guy) although thankfully without the familial furious jumping, presented with a lighter touch headlined by an almost buddy cop relationship between the Cage man and the Perelman.
Like a Dungeons and Dragons side quest DM’ed by Regan from The Exorcist, and yet not anywhere near as cool as that sentence sounds. Season of the Witch touches somewhat on the hypocrisy of the crusades and the witchfinder era, but is ultimately more interested in pushing so-so horror and adventure buttons.
The getting a heavy as fuck horse drawn carriage, across a rickety as fuck rope bridge scene is a standout, in an otherwise ‘just fine’ outing.
