i've been meaning to explore more wider varieties of cinema around the world, and happened to stumble upon this.
conton is a great movie, from the atmosphere, to the effects, everything is really nicely done. for a low budget production in 1987, this movie provides better acting than i see in some modern movies.
the soundtrack to this movie though doesn't really match (although it sounds good) , it has much more of a retro music vibe (as the 80s did) but not much of that haunting, suspenseful atmosphere like the movie has, i would say that's the one actual flaw i could find. other than the soundtrack i really enjoyed the entirety of the movie, especially the fx, which i do wish there was a bit more of and less of these loan sharks.
about the fx and creature design too, during the final scene there is definitely an early kaiju influence to the creature design, especially around it's face, really reminding me of 60s-80s kaiju which i thought was awesome.
otherwise, conton is a great 80s low budget horror movie and is while short, very enjoyable with a decent plot and well executed cinematography and fx.
also the godzila figures were cool i want them now

The score was great & special effects were fun too. Storywise it feelt very regurgitated; seen the same story numerous times before. But I felt like it did it better than most!

Hell yeah, dude. Slimy, sweaty, and gnarly at its best. Also, opens with a quotation from a Taoist text, the Zhuangzi (alright, so technically this is sort of pre-Taoist, having been incorporated into a new school of thought, this school being Taoism). This poor, hot, broke guy, just having weird monster nightmares with Taoist subtext, in between unpleasant altercations with gangsters. Body horror, hooking up with the cute girl who graciously overlooks his bizarre behavior, waking up screaming (usually while still dreaming).
There's a lot to like here, like the Ghostbusters poster on his wall. And the dance sequence/music video, which of course nets an additional half star. Also, the final confrontation ends up taking the form of a slimy tokusatsu showdown between an armored warrior and her enemy on a small set inside somebody's room. Now, since this whole thing is that monster's dream, what does that suggest about the monster's feelings toward the armored warrior? The biggest problem with this film is that I wanted to see the rest of the armored warrior's grimdark Taoist tokusatsu movie...
