Having seen so much animation as of late, I keep noticing how often animated films strip ideas back to their most basic form, the way entire worlds can be built by asking a simple question and sitting with it. The point leans into that, moreso than most from its time. It’s so gentile and fragile, a story that stays so quiet while nudging at what it means to not quite fit where you’re ’meant to’. Is that directness too easy? Or is it where the power lies? The themes are clear from the jump, maybe even too clear, but theres an authenticity to the way it prevents them that makes it pretty hard to push away. Not really any edge here, no cynisism, just the insistence that difference isn’t something to sand down. It made me think about how the medium like no other gets away with saying huge things in simple framing, whether that’s the point or just the safest route I’m not sure. Regardless it’s very cute and it lands more than it misses.
