without a single word being spoken, Franco Piavoli said more than almost any other director in history.
this is cinema at its most beautiful, its most reflective, and its most pure. its almost difficult to call something like this entertainment because it really isnt, its art, its raw expression that happens to use film as a medium, and im deathly in love with it.
i covet this movie to the degree i do for a multitude of reasons, but i think the most obvious is the adaptation. i hold this work of art in roughly the same regard as i do ‘War and Peace’ or ‘Blue Spring’, its one of the few films that actually does a modicum of justice to the monstrosity of greatness that is the source material. i feel like the themes and overall “feeling” of The Odyssey were captured and portrayed with such excellence and understanding in this film, it trumps any other adaptation of Homer’s epic that i know of, and it goes toe to toe with any of the other critically acclaimed live action adaptations of classic literature.
i genuinely love this movie so much, its one of the first films that really pushed the envelope for me on what i was comfortable with and used to, it utilized the medium in a way i never even imagined possible. it changed everything for me, and for that, my love for this film is eternal. it was such an emotional experience this time too, really just a masterpiece in every sense of the term.
