Bobby Womack’s amazing song of the same name has been a staple of my playlist for ages, so naturally I had to watch Across 110th Street. It turned out to be a really great action film.
The grim reality of the film quickly pulls you in. There’s no romanticization of either the robbers or the mobsters, just a blunt depiction of racial division that can literally be seen on a map. The film is visually rich and full of detail. My favorite touch was Nick’s beige coat, which, in my opinion, feels like the uniform of a pristine "businessman" hiding a ruthless sociopath underneath.
Despite having a large ensemble cast, the script gives everyone their moment to shine, and no one gets lost in the plot. Overall, a well rounded piece of cinema history.
