roger taylor should’ve played dorian.
In all seriousness, I don’t think this movie is all that bad. Sure, the quality is horrible and the coloring even worse, every character looks grey or green with almost blue lips. And the costumes are accurate, except for Vanessa Howard as Sibyl Vane, who looks like she never left 1973 at all. Shane Briant gives a very good performance as Dorian in my opinion. He definitely has the sass Oscar Wilde wrote Dorian to have, and the elegance he seems to walk and lounge with. Everyone else’s portrayals in this movie are mediocre, I’ve seen better Harry’s and Basil Hallward is American? That speaks for itself.
The film makes a few plot changes, one of which I like and the other which I don’t. The one I like is that instead of Dorian being done with Sybil because she embarrassed him by acting badly in front of Harry and Basil, he simply sleeps with her and grows bored after that, which leads him to ignore her and leads Sybil to drown herself. Something about him having no good reason at all for ignoring her makes it seem so much more inhuman and Dorian like.
The plot change which I hate isn’t so much a problem with this movie in particular, but with most Dorian Gray adaptations. Whether it’s Beatrice Hallward as the niece of Basil or Victoria Wotton as Harry’s daughter, Dorian does not need a love interest besides Sybil. He does not need to get married in the end and try to change himself for some woman twenty years younger than him. How do I know that? Because Oscar Wilde didn’t write it into the book.
In conclusion, Shane Briant looks like Roger Taylor, and Roger Taylor should’ve and could’ve played him.
