The struggles of women in war is often unseen upon the great sacrifices that men faces. Women are usually not the bravest or most heroic during wars, but it's clearly not their fault, and this movie really capture why. It really shows how hard it is to just survive as a woman in a period where rules are subverted and barbarity and brutality takes control over sanity among men. Cesira and Rosetta are constantly abused in any means by anyone who isn't Michele, they move searching for a place of peace but they find only horrors, the countryside that was supposed to take Cesira back to her childhood brings just hostility, from which they have no way to defend themself. De Sica made a great lesson of morality, criticizing both sides of WWII and teaching us a hard lesson on life.
