this is one of those movies i had on dvd and would watch over and over again in the car with my siblings. i couldn’t tell you how many times i’ve seen it over the years, but i know it’s been a while since my last watch. i felt like it was time to look at beethoven’s 5th with fresh eyes and determine if it is actually as good as i remember.
in my childhood, this was a riveting mystery movie with endlessly quotable dialogue (my siblings and i loved making up insults based on lines or characters in movies, kent mansley from the iron giant was a prime example of this), and i remember us giggling and quoting, “you can’t fire me. i’m an elected official!” and other various snippets from beethoven’s 5th; freddy kablinski’s name was a cuss on par with an f-bomb. i remember being so scared by the ghost nightmare and thinking that the twist was so well thought out. and the taxidermy library cats! those cats are still on my mind all of the time.
upon rewatch, the humor still holds up (surprisingly), and the story is decent. it could have had a scarier or less predictable plot, but this is a movie for kids, after all, and nothing is glaringly obvious. i won’t give it away in case anyone reading this is interested in watching beethoven’s 5th, which i do recommend. i think it’s super fun and zany! this is definitely my favorite movie in the beethoven franchise (but the original is a close second).
