One of the most gorgeous pieces of art I have ever experienced. So thankful to have spent a Sunday afternoon living in this world. 

Whoever says romance requires a happy ending is a) completely wrong and b) obviously hasn’t watched this yet. Sumptuous, devastating, breathtaking, yeah this is a new all-time favourite.

Watched as part of the Criterion Challenge - #36. Glorious Restorations

There is no greater feat a film can achieve than to completely revive an era. To bring life to the dead and allow a social milieu—across time—to again be witnessed. In this age, Pre-Haussmann and Post-Napoleon; there still exists a waft of the medieval in the bawdry Paris boulevards. The beheadings of kings and dukes is still easy to recall and this perhaps lent some amount of insouciance to the affairs of politics. A general sense of levity among the populations after such a climactic past. This spirit gives rise to the great theatres and entertainment cultures from which "Le Blanc Homme' is borne.

It is this atmosphere where the melodrama unfolds. This drama is of course as thrilling and well effected as any great novel. At the centre of it all is Garance (Arletty) who beguiles all with her poise and allure. She is Aphrodite just as Frédérick Lemaître (Pierre Brasseur) is the pursuing and charming Hermes. The actual theatre sequences are some of the best put to screen—one in particular, where Frédérick harnesses the audience to the chagrin of the 'holy trinity', is brilliant.

Nothing is unremarkable in this film. From so much as a "blind" beggar who does gold appraising to a murder-poet who reveals the central cuckoldry of the film. I can't imagine the circumstances surrounding producing such a thing in the midst of World War 2 and it is frankly a miracle that it still exists in entirety for our viewing pleasure. Just brilliant.
