Perfection. The Killing was my last Kubrick film to finish off his filmography and i’m very happy to say this one did not disappoint, well not as good as all his others this is the film where he seemed to have truly discovered his style. This film has a fantastic screen play with the last 20 minutes proving this could be one of the
best heist movies oat (if
Heat did
not exist) the way the story is told is perfect and seeing the plan play out is so cool especially with the unfortunate ending. I absolutely adored every actor in this movie but my stand out would have to go to Elisha Cook Jr. (George Peatty) which i just loved seeing him in the beginning talking to his wife about how he’ll finally get rich for them to the end where he gains all this confidence then needs to deal with the aftermath of this dread he will carry on forever, and then how else could i not mention Sterling Hayden (Johnny Clay) first of all you can’t tell me Johnny Clay ain’t one of the hardest names you’ve ever heard, second of all his final line at the end was just perfect,
Fay: Johnny, you've got to run!Johnny Clay: Eh, what's the difference? This just hit so hard. I loved the score of this movie especially in the big action scenes where it sounded so crisp and clean. The writing for this film is so good and i love how the narrator would keep you up with the times at the end and it felt extremely engaging, and also the dialogue between all the characters flow so well. Lastly i wanted to talk about the cinematography in this film, i really enjoyed when the camera would follow the horses and those scenes mixed in with the editing flowed so well, but my favorite had to have been at the end when we get to see a POV shot from George and you can just feel his terror and how scared he is by how the camera moves, and of course how we see him afterwards.
Kubrick Glaze Section This film is great and i had such an amazing journey going through Kubrick’s filmography with only one movie i truly disliked (
Fear and Desire) this also was the first director who’s filmography i have completed fully and if you do that usually or are looking to start doing that I’d highly recommend starting with Kubrick since he is easily my favorite director and gets praised to be in the Mount Rushmore of directors for a reason, what he is able to do with colors, story, emotions, critiquing issues in society, it’s all just mesmerizing. I highly doubt we will ever get another Kubrick ever since his creativity was just off the charts, i cannot wait to constantly revisit his films and even share some with my family and friends since his art is something that everyone needs to experience, no matter the movie.
“The screen is a magic medium. It has such power that it can retain interest as it conveys emotions and moods that no other art form can hope to tackle.” -Stanley Kubrick
