this movie was quite beautiful. for a concept that seems like it could be complicated and dramatic, the movie remains very lighthearted and humorous. it doesn’t view sex in a negative way but instead celebrates its beauty and sensuality. fernando isn’t necessarily a very interesting character but his relationships with the women are beautiful. he is different when he is with each of the sisters and in a way, he transforms to fit what each woman needs in that moment. as opposed to fernando, i found the sisters to be very intriguing characters.
i really liked the overall theme of contentedness and the appreciation of beauty and sensuality during a brief time. as well as the idea to not be afraid of death and to instead let death and beauty live side by side. because without death, we would never really appreciate beauty. nothing good lasts forever and there is always the threat of death looming over us but it is good to appreciate the peace while we can. this also ties in with the time period as this takes place a little bit before the spanish civil war. so this was a brief moment of peace before the terrible days to come.
there is probably more to this movie that i didn’t understand specifically with the language as i’m not a spanish speaker, but i still feel that i took a lot away from this movie.
