Paul Newman is so charismatic in this it’s actually dangerous. He plays Hud with such a distinct, magnetic rot that you almost want to side with him, even when he’s being an absolute menace to everyone in his orbit.
It’s a gorgeous, dusty look at the death of the "Old West" moral code, though it drags just a hair too much in the middle for me to go full four stars. Still, that cynical edge is sharp as a razor.<blockquote><b>"He's gone to a better place."</b>
<b>"I don't think so. Not unless dirt is a better place than air."</b></blockquote>
Patricia Neal is the absolute soul of this movie, though. The way she handles Hud’s nonsense with that weary, knowing confidence is easily the best part of the film.
