“people say you can’t wash away the mud of this world with pure white snow. you need asura snow - stained fiery red”
this has sat on my watchlist for a while, mainly because i had other priorities, and i just couldn’t really find it anywhere (until i realised it was apart of the criterion collection). action generally isn’t my go to genre, it’s actually probably my least favourite movie genre (besides like western/war, but i really haven’t watched enough of those to judge them) and i think im really picky when it comes towards them, i hate like 60% of them, but the ones i like i really like. kill bill both volumes and one battle after another are three movies i loved a lot, as well as terminator 2 and the extreme grindhouse japanese flicks (like tokyo gore police and machine girl) this ticked quite a lot of the titles: it’s japanese, has blood in its title and a lot of people say this is massive inspiration for his kill bill films, and they really weren’t lying, he really did copy the entire thing (i still love them obviously) and unfortunately, i kinda prefer kill bill vol.1, but i’f say lady snow blood is better than vol.2. when i started watching, i surprisingly wasn’t totally into it: but as it went along, i started enjoying it more and more. i noticed quite a couple technical errors, especially in the sound, but the visuals itself fully makes up for it. the contrast between the radioactive looking blood, to the pale snow was gorgeous. the lighting looked quite rich, even maybe dream like. a massive critique i have for most action flicks, is they’re visually uninteresting or repulsive, this totally subverts that. yuki as a character was enchanting, her repressed pain as she executes her mothers rapists, she’s a highly compelling protagonist who just looks like a complete badass, and her actress really got into the role, the main thing i like about her is she’s quite morally ambiguous, showing her as a machine or instrument whos main role in life was to take vengeance for her mother. rape-revenge movies are highly hit or miss, for instance the ‘i spit on your grave’ films felt ineffective, and even male gazey at times. this uses non-linear flashbacks to show why yuki is doing what she’s doing, giving reasons for her acts of violence, and makes you empathise with the character. the soundtrack was generally great, and the geysers of volcanic looking blood just spouting out everywhere was addicting.
