Kore-eda has made some of my top favourites. Typically, I forge such a deep emotional connection with his films that they bring me to tears over and over again with rewatches. This, however, unironically made me feel so distanced from the characters. I felt no emotional connection to anyone in the film, though understanding him as a filmmaker and the situating of this film a couple years after the Aum Shinrikyo chemical attacks at Tokyo Station, I feel as if it’s intentional. It’s a hard sit through for that very reason, though the wistful romance of the images is enough to keep anyone engaged until the end. Maybe I’ll have to keep rewatching it, I’m not sure. On the first try, I just feel so empty.
