The main criticisms I’ve seen of this movie are that Phillip is incredibly annoying as the “protagonist” and there seem to be random grammatical errors within the narration that are too few and far between to have been on purpose, but I read both of these things as being in line with the tone and humour of the movie in a good way. Phillip is the main character but far from being the protagonist which is what makes his character so interesting and funny, as even the very first scene we have with him displays most of his negative character traits. Additionally he is played by Jason Schwartzman, which immediately makes the character more interesting. As for the misused words in the script, whether or not it was intentional (which I think it probably was), it helps create a vibe of false or misused intellectualism which summarizes Phillip’s relationship to the literary space pretty well

Appreciated how relentless this is. Phillip is just as selfish, vain and cruel at the end as he is in the beginning. There’s really no moment of change or learning. There’s a brief moment where we get a backstory/explanation, but the way Phillip uses it as a cudgel in an argument makes you question how much of it is even true.
