The format is just too weird to work that well. It's a real documentary at its heart, but the fictional story surrounding it, while compelling, throws things off. Charlyne is incredibly likable and I did become invested in her journey, and the acted scenes with Cera are well done, but the two parts don't mix well. I'd have gladly watched just the documentary about Charlyne learning about love and talking about her own feelings or watched a quirky romantic-comedy starring Charlyne and Cera, but it's confusing to combine them. It really makes the ending hard to do and what we get does match the goofiness, but lands flat. Really, Charlyne's personality does a lot of the hard work in keeping this whole thing together (she may have landed on my celebrity crush list), but having a good host doesn't make a game show work.
