great film, beyond gorgeous cinematography. i don't think this movie would have felt the same and made the same impact if it was in colour. the last picture show was especially interesting to me as i'm about the same age as the main characters and live in a small town with nothing to do, though i don't think and certainly don't hope the following year will be anything like this.

cloris leachman was friggin INCREDIBLE. deserved that oscar 100%. i'm mainly writing this review to say that. i'm watching the mary tyler moore show right now, and seeing her performance in this film while being used to her as phyllis was really something. loved eileen brennan too, and despite being at the same stage of life as the main characters and finding that adds an extra layer of appeal, i was the most engaged by the adults. i loved billy though, he was so sweet and deserved so much better.

I think there is a lot to like about this movie. It feels like a truly intimate exploration of an era that is now over. Still, it maintains relevance by observing growing up and missing out. The people in this movie feel real. They have faults, sometimes don't know what to say and feel genuine. I had some gripes with the movie. Some scene did not seem to lead anywhere, and the cinematography felt sometimes too observant. I also honestly would have preferred color, even though I can see why the director chose not to. Still a great movie though.
