Roger Corman’s gorgeously gothic adaption of Poe, with the dual star power of Vincent Price in the lead and Nicholas Roeg behind the camera.
Price is Prince Prospero, who taxes poor village folk and lives the high life, all while his constituents are unalived by the spreading red masque plague, leaving victims afflicted with a crimson mask. There is one villager that Prospero takes a shining to though, Francesca (Jane Asher) whose faith in God is too strong to succumb to the Prince’s satanic ways. Oh did he mention he worships Satan too?
This is just gorgeous to look at with Nicholas Roeg and the production design team working overtime to produce glorious colour pops in shades of red, green, yellow and purple. It would be wrong to call Price understated here, but he does add a level of cold malice to his performance that balances out the usual camp.
